If you haven't already visited my DVD/Video page, please do so as this is a continuation of some of the things said there. One thing I can tell you for certain. If you are taking pictures and not cataloging and storing those pictures properly, you will eventually (when you get to be my age) regret not doing so. Of course it's a lot of work, but that's no excuse. One way to reduce the burden is to do a small amount at a time, that's what I'm doing. Over a period of a couple of years I've managed to get most of my old negatives scanned, transferred to CD and loaded into my Personal Digital Multimedia ScrapBook. I've still got a small amount of scanning and a lot of cataloging to do, and it'll come as I can squeeze it in. The important part is that I can get to most any picture, view it full screen, or print a copy in a very short period of time. Even though I haven't completed the cataloging, access is greatly simplified by the PDMSB browse capability which fills the screen with small (but viewable) thumbnails. Since the thumbnails are contained in my files, this process is very fast, when compared to programs that have to calculate a thumbnail on the fly. I know that all of my future activity in photography will be centered around digital pictures. In fact, I recently took all of my analog (film) photo equipment and traded for a Minolta Dimage 7 still camera and a Canon GL1 digital video camcorder. I intend to publish more on the use of these cameras as time progresses.
